A former teacher has denied that he had improper sexual relations with a schoolboy he taught at Terenure College when the alleged victim was 14.

However, the 63-year-old accused admitted that he had "inappropriate sexual relations" with the pupil at a later stage.

He told his counsel, Mr Hugh Hartnett SC: "This behaviour shouldn't have happened. It was wrong." He apologised to the college, which he said had been very good to him for 34 years and also to the alleged victim and his family.

"I want to apologise unreservedly for any hurt they suffered as a result of my actions at any time," he said.

The defendant told Mr Hartnett the first time he had had sexual relations with the complainant was following a school rugby match in March 1988.

He said the pupil called to his house that evening. They were discussing the game and had their chairs close together when "I kissed him, and he responded, and we ended up having mutual masturbation. We sat for a while, had tea and I drove him home."

He said the alleged victim then asked him for money on a number of occasions. He gave him cheques first for IR£50 and then for IR£650 after the complainant told him he "owed a bookie a lot of money".

He said the pair had engaged in further sexual activity at his home and that following the summer holidays of that year the complainant would call to his house every seven or eight weeks.

In 1989 the situation changed when a family member moved into his home. He described two further incidents in which he and the complainant had sexual relations at a location in the Dublin mountains and in the medical room of the gym at Terenure College.

He said this last incident occurred in 1990, and the pair "indulged in sexual activity" again in 1992 before he dropped him off at a pub.

After that he was contacted by the complainant and wrote him a cheque for £200 sterling in college fees. He described an exchange of letters between him and the student who, he said, last called to his house unexpectedly in 1997 for a cup of coffee.

The alleged victim then rang him in January 1998, informing him that he was going to make a complaint.

He said the complainant's allegations that they had had a sexual relationship when he was in second year were "absolutely not true".

The teacher, now retired, has pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two charges of indecently assaulting the alleged victim between November 1st and December 31st, 1985, at his south Dublin home.

He also denies 12 counts of gross indecency.

The trial continues before Judge Frank O'Donnell and a jury.
