Ex-teaching brother faces abuse charges

A former Waterford-based Christian Brother was charged yesterday with 122 counts of sexual assault against schoolboys

A former Waterford-based Christian Brother was charged yesterday with 122 counts of sexual assault against schoolboys. The 50-year-old man appeared at Dublin District Court accused of committing the offences between 1977 and 1990.

Most of the offences are alleged to have occurred in Co Waterford but the former teacher is also accused of abusing in Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare and Cork.

Sgt Denis Barry told the court that the defendant, who was already charged with 14 offences in Co Tipperary, made no reply when charged with the 122 new offences yesterday.

The sergeant said gardai had no objection to bail and the defendant was released after an independent surety of £2,000 was approved.

Judge Catherine Murphy remanded the defendant on bail to appear again on January 15th.

Some former pupils of the defendant from Co Waterford, who are alleged victims, attended court accompanied by relatives.

After the hearing the Christian Brothers issued a statement pointing out they had co-operated fully with gardai in the case, but could not comment further at this stage of the proceedings.
