Exchange House Traveller Services will be the first Irish community group to participate in the research project funded by Minerva, the EU distance education and eLearning programme.

Eight Irish bodies have been chosen to take part in six of the 26 projects funded under Minerva's €7.5 million programme, it was announced yesterday.

Each of the bodies will receive grants of about €280,000 to €300,000 towards the research projects, but the exact amounts are yet to be finalised.

Two of the projects are to be Irish-led. Waterford Institute of Technology will manage a research project on virtual classes and LM Ericsson will manage a project on education and training using personal digital assistants and smartphones.

Dublin City University, St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, and National College of Ireland are to be partners in other projects.
