An exhibition and lectures on the role of Irish soldiers in the First World War will today be opened by cross-border writers in Trinity College.

Dubliner Sebastian Barry and Belfast-based Michael Longley, who have written widely on the subject, will launch the series of special events in Dublin.

The symposium, entitled: Commemorating the Unthinkable: Europe, Ireland and the Great Warwill include readings by Barry and Longley and lectures by specialist academics.

An exhibition, The Great War Revisited: Ireland and World War 1features recruitment posters and soldiers' letters from the trenches.

A spokesperson for the event said; "The Great War of 1914-18 was fought to save civilisation but it unleashed a mass slaughter.

"The appalling reality of industrial warfare has presented artists, writers, historians and social commentators with profound questions about representation, understanding and commemoration."
