Two new exhibits at the Central Library, ILAC Centre, Dublin, aim to interest the public in astronomy using as few technical terms as possible. The exhibits are part of the library's contribution to Science Week Ireland.

"What is Amateur Astronomy?" is sponsored by the Irish Astronomical Society and features photographs by amateur astronomers and text by a society member, Mr John Flannery.

Explanations and pictures of the sun, eclipses, galaxies and the Northern Lights are also included, and Mr Flannery writes of his recent eclipse-viewing experience in Bulgaria.

"The Sun and Beyond" exhibit gives statistics on the nine planets of the solar system as well as biographies of famous astronomers, including Edmund Halley, Johannes Kepler and Tyco Brahe.
