Seanad Report: Dr Maurice Hayes (Ind) asked the leader of the House to seek from the Minister for Justice an explanation as to why gardaí had to wait to interview the drivers of the buses involved in last weekend's tragedy in Dublin.

In a reference to the "appalling accident", Dr Hayes said he did not wish to add to the sorrow of those who had been bereaved.

But he would like the Leader of the House to ask the Minister for Justice to explain a report that the drivers "could not be interviewed by the guards until they were given permission by counsellors employed by the Dublin Bus Company".

He could see situations in which people were too traumatised to be interviewed.

"But I think the decision on whether the police have access to witnesses or not should not depend on the employees or the consultants to an organisation which may or may not be criticised in the end of the day."

Ms Ann Ormonde (FF) said the Minister for Transport should be invited to address the House on this horrific accident.

She believed that there should be a co-ordinated plan involving the local authorities of the city and county in relation to traffic management, with an input by the Minister.

"We all have recognised that many of the out-of-service buses do speed along the road when they are not on call at bus stops. I think this is an aspect of it which has to be looked at."

Whatever system was brought in, it was time to have traffic calming measures and traffic management, added Ms Ormonde.
