The Army has made safe a viable explosive device abandoned near a park in north Dublin.

A bomb disposal team was summoned by gardaí to examine the device on Dunsink Lane in Finglas this evening.

The device, discovered near St Joseph's Park, was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion, an Army spokesman said.

The team arrived on scene at 6.05pm, the scene was declared safe at 7.30pm.

The remains of the device were handed over to gardaí to aid their investigation, the spokesman said.
