A man who was extradited back from Spain to face a murder charge has been remanded in custody to appear before the Central Criminal Court.
Mr Colin Whelan (33), Clonard Street, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, will appear before Mr Justice Carney today. He was charged in April 2001 with the murder of his wife Mary at their home. Sgt Patrick Marry, Balbriggan Garda Station, arrested Mr Whelan at Dublin Airport on Friday after he was flown back from Madrid under the new European extradition system.
On Saturday Bridewell District Court was told Mr Whelan had been cautioned and asked if he would like to check the warrant against the original.
A solicitor for the State asked Judge Patrick Brady to remand Mr Whelan in custody.
Mr Whelan's solicitor, Mr Michael Hennessy, said he had no further applications to make. - (PA)
