A warrant has been granted for the extradition of a Belfast man to the Republic to face a charge of raping his nine year old niece. The offence is alleged to have taken place in Dublin last year when the girl was visiting her uncle.
The man (29) is not being named to protect the identity of his alleged victim.
A Garda officer told Belfast Magistrates' Court that the man had been released after being questioned about the alleged rape and an alleged indecent assault on a 13 year old Dublin girl. He said the DPP in Dublin had now directed that the man should be charged with both offences.
An RUC detective said he arrested the man in Belfast on Wednesday on foot of warrants issued by gardai. The magistrate, Mr Tom Travers, remanded the man in custody to Maghaberry Prison, near Lisburn. He has 15 days to appeal.
