Michael Viney responds to queries and observations on nature.
On March 18th, while enjoying a lunch break at the summit of Brandon Mountain, I spotted a snow bunting. Is this unusual in Co Kerry?
Pat Dignam, Knocklyon, Dublin 16
Small flocks arrive most winters and they have been seen in Kerry on a number of occasions. They are usually gone by April
On St Patrick's Day I saw around 12 waxwings on the telephone line at the end of my garden. They made several trips to the cotoneasters and then in the late evening flew away. They are such beautiful birds that I feel privileged to have had their company if only for a day.
Maureen Brady, New Ross, Co Wexford
There have been many sightings also in Dublin
Shortly after midnight, on the Old Conna-Rathmichael road, we encountered a very big owl, standing on the road. It was about 36cm high, either a long-eared or short-eared owl, and totally motionless, spooky. There are M50 roadworks nearby, perhaps a good source of rats or mice?
Paul Cullen, Templeville Rd, Dublin
Most likely a long-eared owl which are residents. Short-eared owls are scarce passage and winter visitors.
