On visiting Atlantic Pond in Cork City to feed the ducks on March 29th, I spotted a sacred ibis, which appeared to be nesting in the heron colony there. It subsequently joined the ducks for bread.
Fleur Dixon, Beaumont, Cork
The sacred ibis, white with black head, neck and tail, breeds in central and east Africa. It was introduced to France where one population now breeds. It is of the same Order as herons. Report confirmed. It could be a first record for Ireland.
Recently a duck fell down the chimney of the St Stephen's Green Club into the diningroom. Was it looking for a nest site?
Wyndham Beere, Kilternan, Co Dublin
Seems likely.
With the glorious spring awakening, we've been tickled pink with a new migrant - a male great spotted woodpecker. What a splash of colour.
Paddy Wilkinson, Borris, Co Carlow
A very rare visitor. The last report I can find was one visiting Antrim in 1991.
