The new-look Eyre Square will finally be opened to the public tomorrow following delays and controversy over the cost of the work.

The revamp of the square was completed by construction company Siac, after the original contractors, Kingston Construction, pulled out of the unfinished project last year.

A final figure for the overall cost has yet to be produced by the city council.

Councillors estimate the figure at anything from €9 million to €11 million.

Mayor of Galway Cllr Brian Walsh has announced that the barriers around the square will be coming down tomorrow, giving the public access to the new plaza.

The mayor paid tribute to the efforts of everyone over recent months including Galway City Council officials, Siac and the special taskforce for getting the project back on course and for having it finished by April as planned.

While praising the latest efforts of the city manager and his team in getting the square reopened, Labour Cllr Tom Costello suggested that the Eyre Square fiasco had given a new phrase to the English language - "to Eyre Square it".

City manager Joe McGrath said that this would be a very good week for the city with the opening of what he described as "the finest plaza in the country".
