Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann and Southampton striker Kevin Phillips have been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following their spat during the Gunners' 1-0 Premiership win at St Mary's on December 29th.

Lehmann has been charged for an incident at the end of the match when he threw the ball at the back of Phillips' head. Referee Steve Dunn included the incident in his match report.

Phillips has also been charged for a separate incident in which he appeared to stand on Lehmann's foot. Both players have until January 23rd to respond to the charges.

Lehmann said after the match: "Phillips pushed me in the back and was standing on my foot and you must be punished for that."
