Aston Villa today confirmed that they have handed over details relating to their former manager John Gregory's transfer transactions during his spell in charge of the club.
Villa released the files to the English FA after a request from their Compliance Unit, which has already been examining details for several months.
They involve some of Gregory's foreign signings in Bosko Balaban, Ozalan Alpay and £9.5 million club record signing Juan Pablo Angel.
A Villa spokesman said: "As with a number of clubs we can confirm information has been handed over to the Football Association. The paperwork involves foreign transfers during John Gregory's time as manager at Aston Villa.
It is understood that the deal which has created most interest is the £6million splashed out to Dinamo Zagreb to secure the services of Croatian international Balaban, who did not start a single Premiership game for Villa before being loaned back to Dinamo Zagreb in the summer.
Balaban, who is having the majority of his wages being paid by Villa, turned out to be Gregory's last big money signing before he quit Villa Park in January and took up the post as Derby County manager at Pride Park.
There was also a complicated deal to be thrashed out before Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel eventually signed from River Plate 23 months ago.
At the time is it understood that Villa chairman Doug Ellis was contemplating pulling the plug on the deal over doubts as to whether the money was going to River Plate or a South American agent involved in the negotiations.
Angel has gone on to have an up and down career with Villa, top-scoring with 16 goals last season but having only a bit part to play under Gregory's successor Graham Taylor, who had initial been resigned to losing the player last summer.
Alpay was signed 18 months ago by Gregory for just under £6million from Fenerbache and had a successful first season at the club.
But he asked for a transfer after returning from helping Turkey to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup and a parting of the ways seems inevitable when the transfer window reopens next month.
Gregory made a shock departure from the club in January for reasons which publicly have never been made completely clear although it was common knowledge that his relationship with chairman Doug Ellis was strained.
A club statement agreed by Gregory and Villa at the time claimed that the former England midfielder had resigned because he needed a break from the game - but within two weeks he was back in charge at Derby.
