Political betFianna Fáil's Frank Fahey won on the double in the election - not only did he retain his Galway West seat, he also picked up a cool €8,000 from a former Fine Gael minister.
Deputy Fahey placed a bet with Celtic Bookmakers, the bookies owned and run by former Fine Gael agriculture minister Ivan Yates that Maireád McGuinness and Mary Lou McDonald would not be elected.
McGuinness stood for Fine Gael in Louth, while Sinn Féin's McDonald was a contender in Dublin Central.
"Both were expected to take seats according to the polls and others, but I felt neither of them would make it and Ivan gave me 8-1 on it," said Fahey.
He placed €1,000 on the bet and collected after all four outgoing TDs were returned in Louth, while McDonald was eliminated after the seventh count in Dublin North.
