A funfair ferris wheel is proving an unusual contributor to traffic gridlock this weekend for motorists on the M50 motorway in Dublin.

AA Roadwatch says motorists are slowing down to look at a ferris wheel erected just beside the motorway at Coldcut Bridge. This is contributing to the usual delays on the notoriously congested toll road.

The M50 may suffer further delays from 9pm tonight until 11am tomorrow when a contra-flow system will be put in place from Kellystown Bridge to Ballinteer east. The northbound exit from the M50 to the Ballinteer interchange will be closed.

Traffic for Ballinteer will divert via Leopardstown Road, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Drummartin Link Road and the Green Route, according to AA Roadwatch.

Southbound motorists on the M50 should also be aware of the new layout at the toll plaza. The four operator lanes are on the left side for those requiring change or receipts.

Traffic may also be a little slow tomorrow around Landsdowne Road, where Neil Diamond will take the stage for a sell-out show. Gates open at 7.30pm.

In Wicklow, traffic is in single lane on the Manor Kilbride Road in Blessington due to tree felling. The restrictions are in place today and tomorrow and delays are likely.

Motorists in Limerick should also expect delays on both approaches to Newcastle West on the N21 due to roadworks.

In Cork and Limerick, some 150 cyclists with support vehicles in train are pedalling from Cork city to Limerick on the N20 for the Pfizer charity cycle in aid of Chernobyl.

The convoy is due to leave Limerick city tomorrow for Galway on the N18, and a gentle "honk" of support from motorists rather than road rage might be appreciated.

In Sligo, the Ballyfree road south of Sligo town is closed to traffic due to further notice because of damage to the railway bridge.

Traffic will also be on the move around the country for a number of major GAA games this weekend.

The major events include Sunday’s Leinster Senior Hurling Championships at Croke Park, where the Wexford v Laois match throw-in is at 2.15, followed by the Kilkenny v Offaly clash at 4.05.

Also on Sunday, Clare will play Cork at Cusack Park in the Munster Senior Football Championship, and the Ulster clash at Clones is between Donegal and Armagh.

The Connacht Senior Football clash between Galway and Leitrim is at Pearse Stadium.

Met Éireann is predicting reasonably settled weather for the weekend, with cloud and some sunny spells.
