Harare - Zimbabwe's Catholic bishops have urged President Robert Mugabe's government to ensure justice and fairness in its controversial land reform plans.
The bishops said in a statement circulated on Saturday at the end of Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party conference in the eastern city of Mutare that the government should set up a mechanism to resettle the landless and should fairly compensate farmers whose land will be seized. The government plans to take 13.7 million acres, about half the country's prime commercial farmland, mainly from white farmers.
