Kevin O'Connor, author of the book Sweetie on the life and times of one C.J. Haughey, is off to Frankfurt for the German Film Festival. There, he tells Quidnunc, he will be one of only two Irish authors invited to submit treatments of a screenplay. O'Connor will bring with him an outline for a movie based on Sweetie, but with a different title.
It is, he says, a hot potato, with "many new revelations", and it is heartening that there is such an interest abroad in this work about political derring-do in Ireland. He has been told not to discuss the screenplay, but it is a work of "faction", he says, with characters we all know and love. Could any of them, Quidnunc wonders, be persuaded to play themselves?
