Families are being urged to shop healthier as part of the Eat Smart Week launched today by the Nutrition and Health Foundation (NHF).

The initiative aims at making healthy eating easier and more affordable to all and gives shoppers tips on how to feed a family of four nutritious meals on a budget of €100 per week.

Dr Muireann Cullen of the NHF warned that with the rise of childhood obesity in Ireland “urgent steps” are needed.

She said: “If you put some thought and planning into your weekly shopping, then you are more likely to eat healthily for the week”

Dr Cullen said the week offers people the opportunity to become more aware of what there are actually putting into their shopping trolleys.

“Despite the current economic climate, you can still eat very well on a budget,” she added.

As part of the campaign Michelin-star chef Derry Clarke of L'Ecrivain devised seven nutritious and inexpensive meals including spicy Moroccan chicken, rack of pork, and steamed mussels, for under €100.
