A young family escaped injury when a pipe bomb exploded near their car in Lisburn this morning.
The husband and wife and their two-year-old child were driving on the Brokerstown Road when the pipe bomb detonated around 9.30am.
Police said it was not clear whether the device exploded as their car drove past or over it or whether it fell off the vehicle.
They said initial inquiries indicated that the family had no connection with the security forces.
Minor damage was sustained to the car.
Fragments of the pipe bomb type device were recovered and are being examined by forensic experts.
The road remained closed this evening as police carried out further searches.
Officers are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area in the last 24 hours to come forward.
