The family of missing Irishman Niall McDonough arrived in Australia last night to help with the search, Australian police said.
His parents, brother, and sister travelled to Byron Bay yesterday, where Mr McDonough (30) was last seen by his girlfriend on Friday June 12th. She saw him as he left a backpacker’s hostel at 9pm on to go for a walk.
There was an intensive air, land and sea search for Mc McDonough following his disappearance. It was called off after two days of searching failed to trace him. Scaled-back searches and inquiries continued this week and were called off last night.
The search will resume on Sunday if he is not found before then.
A member of the public located some of Mr McDonough's belongings on a park bench near the Cape Byron lighthouse early on Saturday morning.
He is described as being 170-centimetres tall with a thin build, shaved red hair and blue eyes.
He was last seen bare-chested and wearing grey jeans with a billabong belt and runners, according to police. Police said they were concerned for Mr McDonough’s well-being as he suffers a medical condition that requires treatment.
The police and Department of Foreign Affairs could not say where Mr McDonough is from in Ireland.
