The report of the Law Reform Commission on Family Courts has been criticised by the Family Law Action Group over its proposal for an increase in the number of judges involved in family law.
Spokesman Mr Brian O'Doherty said the purpose of the group was to "expose family law as a racket". It was already, wrong, he said, to have one person, a judge, deciding the fate of a family. Increasing the number of judges increased the wrong.
The group proposed a tribunal, similar to the Employment Appeals Tribunal, which would have representatives of both sides of the argument, with a chairman, and which would hear cases in public. Asked whether this would not deter people from having cases heard, Mr O'Doherty said that it would encourage them to come to an agreement.
