Liverpool - The family of a schizophrenic man shot dead by police after he went berserk with a sword yesterday demanded to know why officers let him loose onto the street.

Around six officers were called to the home of Mr Andrew Kernan after his family and psychiatric workers became concerned about his emotional state. Mr Kernan later managed to leave the flat, where he lived with his mother, and was shot twice in the chest outside a pub.

His uncle and aunt, Mr Ted and Mrs Pauline Devlin, demanded to know why the officers allowed him to grab the sword and leave the flat. "If they had kept him in that flat he would have been alive today," Mr Devlin said.
