The family of a man who died after being ejected from a bar in Cork city almost five years ago was yesterday awarded €185,000 in a settlement approved by the High Court.

Anthony Hennessy (41) died in Cork University Hospital on March 14th, 2008, after being ejected from Mo Chuisle Bar on Blarney Street.

Yesterday, the High Court sitting in Cork approved the settlement for Mr Hennessy’s partner, Yvonne Quilligan, of Mount St Joseph’s Heights, Gurranebraher, Cork.

There was no admission of liability. The hearing before Mr Justice John Edwards was for the purpose of approving a settlement offer from the defendants to Ms Quilligan and her four daughters.

Ms Quilligan had brought the action against the owner of Mo Chuisle, Niall Burns and his brothers, Terry Burns and Tony Burns.

Approving the settlement, Mr Justice Edwards said: “Unfortunately, the law is singularly ill-equipped to meet a tragedy like this. Money is meaningless in the context of losing a husband and father.” Counsel for Ms Quilligan, John O’Mahony SC, said liability would have been very much at issue in the case if it had gone to trial.
