A 10-year-old child is believed to have been among the family that survived a gun attack on their west Belfast home, it emerged today.

Up to five members of the family are thought to have been in the house in Laburnum Park, Twinbrook, when a single shot was fired at the building shortly after midnight.

No one was injured and no motive is yet known, but the mother of the family is thought to have left her living room shortly before the bullet pierced its window.

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann who visited the family today condemned those responsible for the shooting.

“I unreservedly condemn the gun attack on this house,” she said.

“Thankfully no one was injured. This attack was wrong and those responsible have put lives at risk both at the home targeted and families living in adjoining homes.”

Police have said there is no known motive for the shooting and they have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

SDLP Lisburn councillor Brian Heading described the attack as a despicable act.

“We had all hoped that attacks of this nature were consigned to the past,” he said. "Thankfully no-one was injured but it is clear those who carried out this attack did so with a callous disregard for human life.
