Some passengers on Dublin's Luas face fare increases from today, bringing them into line with Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann, which all increased their fares by an average of 3.8 per cent earlier this week.
Journeys made with the Luas smartcard, tickets bought from a Luas sales agent and all children's tickets will however remain at existing prices.
Tickets bought at vending machines will increase by 10 cent for a standard maximum fare, bringing the cost to €2.10. The maximum return fare is to rise by 10 cent to €3.90.
Iarnród Éireann said the increase brought the cost of a monthly rail commuter ticket in the Dublin area to €83, a rise of €3. The Cork-Dublin five-day return fare increased by €2.50.
Dublin Bus said most of its standard fares would rise by about five cent, bringing its cheapest fare to 95 cent. The next fare at €1.30 has risen to €1.35.
Bus Éireann increased provincial city service fares by five cent. The increase applies to all single fares on all city services in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.
The increases have been criticised by Opposition spokespeople on transport and the recently established Commuter North Rail Users Group, which claims the cost of commuting from the northeast is too high when compared with fares elsewhere.
