CANBERRA - Australia's biggest farming organisation said yesterday that almost two in three people supported its push for farmers to be protected against Aboriginal land claims.

The National Farmers' Federation said polling conducted in response to a television advertising campaign on land rights found 62 per cent of those surveyed backed the farmers, and 58 per cent believed their plight was genuine or believable.

Farmers are pressing the national government to give pastoral leases - granted to farmers and graziers since white settlement began - supremacy over Aboriginal landrights claims.
