THE GARDA Síochána Ombudsman Commission is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Galway man in a road incident on Sunday night.

The man, who has been named as John Donnellan of Beagh, Dunmore, north Galway, died in a single-vehicle crash outside Williamstown, Co Galway.

The 22-year-old man had been due to return to work in Poland yesterday. The crash occurred several kilometres from his home shortly before midnight on the R360 Dunmore-Williamstown road.

The Garda ombudsman’s office said it was investigating the incident “as a Garda car was in the vicinity at the time”.

No other vehicle was involved. It is believed Mr Donnellan died after his car hit the roadside and overturned.

The single man was the eldest son of John and Kathleen Donnellan from Dunmore. He is survived by his parents and two siblings.

The road was closed to traffic yesterday while technical examinations took place.
