The father and son who tragically died in a drowning accident in Co Clare yesterday have been named as Michael Cunningham (41) and his 10-year-old son James from Clonlara.

The two were killed when the child fell into a quarry and his father jumped in to try to rescue him shortly after 6.30pm at Aylroe, near Kildysart, in the southwest of the county.

It is understood the man was herding cattle when his son lost his footing on gravel and fell 20 feet into the water.

The boy's father jumped in to try and save his son, but both were drowned. The two were pronounced dead at the scene.
