A Co Donegal father and son, who were jailed two years ago for having explosives, had their appeals rejected by the Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday.

Andrew Gillespie (53), a father of four, of Navenney Street, Ballybofey, had been jailed for 12 years in March, 1994, by the Special Criminal Court after being found guilty of having explosives with intent to endanger life and assaulting a detective.

A week earlier, his son, Andrew Gillespie jnr (27), had also been jailed for 10 years for having explosives. Both men were found guilty of possession of explosive substances with intent to endanger life at Navenney on August 4th, 1993.

Mr Justice Barrington said the evidence was overwhelming that the two were guilty of the offences for which they had been convicted. He said there had been no miscarriage of justice and the court would dismiss the appeal.
