London - A father who helped his suicidal daughter to die walked free from court yesterday after a receiving a suspended prison sentence.

James Lawson (52) of West Sussex, helped Sarah Lawson (22) to take a drugs overdose, which failed, before suffocating her in April last year.

Mr Justice Nelson, sitting at Maidstone Crown Court, told Lawson it was clear to him that "no help was immediately available" for his mentally ill daughter. The judge sentenced Lawson to a two-year prison term, suspended for two years, and two years' probation.
