A father who regularly beat his son and got him to clean up his vomit after a night's drinking was sentenced to three months in prison at Galway District Court yesterday.
The man pleaded guilty to assaulting his 15-year-old son on January 6th last at their home, when he appeared before Judge Mary Devins.
Describing it as a very sad and traumatic case, Insp Tony O'Donnell said the boy had suffered years of abuse from his violent father.
Insp O'Donnell said the boy's mother had left the family home when the boy and his older brother were just toddlers. The father, he said, had subjected the youngest son to years of abuse, which culminated in the assault with the handle of a sweeping brush last January.
The inspector said the father had a severe drink problem.
