The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Mr Louis Freeh, will address international police training sessions in Dublin and Belfast in September, but no FBI officers will be allowed to take part in the training because of RUC involvement.

The US Congress has passed a law preventing the FBI from training RUC officers until President Clinton is satisfied the Patten Commission recommendations have been fully implemented.

Mr Freeh has written to Congressman Ben Gilman, who was a leading sponsor of the law, assuring him "the FBI is not providing any financial or instructional support" for the "retraining" sessions in Dublin and Belfast. They will be attended by over 300 law enforcement officers from over 40 countries.
