Wimbledon: Roger Federer is safely through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals after a straight-sets victory over Lleyton Hewitt. So too is second seed Rafael Nadal, who overcame an injury scare to book his place in the last eight.

The five-time champion will meet Mario Ancic in the last eight after a 7-6 6-2 6-4 success on Centre Court.

Hewitt, the last man to win the title before Federer's domination of the All England Club began, stayed with the world number one in the opening set, only to lose it 9-7 in a tie-break.

That was enough to break the gritty Australian's resistance and Federer breezed into a 3-0 lead in the second set with two breaks of serve.

The Swiss star comfortably served out the set before claiming another service break early in the third, needing only one chance to break on each occasion.

Hewitt forced eight break points against the Federer serve, but failed to convert any of them as the 26-year-old from Basel rose to the challenge on the crucial points.

Ancic, the last man to defeat Federer at the All England Club back in 2002, won an epic five-setter against the Spanish 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco.

The unseeded Croatian lost the first two sets but hit back for an incredible 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 13-11 victory.

Second seed Nadal overcame an injury scare to clinch his quarter-final place with a 6-3 6-3 6-1 triumph over Mikhail Youzhny.

The match was just one game old when the Spaniard requested a break to allow his trainer to treat a knee injury after he pulled up when racing to return a drop shot.

When play resumed the knee was dressed with extra strapping and the manner in which he bludgeoned his way to open up a 1-0 set lead suggested there was nothing to worry about.

From then Nadal was in his element as he ground his Russian opponent out of contention with a relentless barrage of shots and he went on to wrap up victory in two hours and 10 minutes.

Meanwhile Feliciano Lopez came through a thrilling five-set clash with 10th seed Marcos Baghdatis to win 5-7 6-2 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 8-6.

The 31 seed from Spain had to defend three match points on his own serve in the final set before eventually booking his place in the quarter-finals.

Rainer Schuettler of Germany also reached the last eight when nudging out another unseeded player Janko Tipsarevic 6-4 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7/4).
