Tennis: Fernando Gonzalez sent Roger Federer tumbling to a stunning defeat at the ATP Masters Cup in Shanghai today.

The Chilean had never beaten Federer in 10 previous attempts but fought back from a set down to post a 3-6 7-6 (7/1) 7-5 win in what was both players' opening match in the Red Group.

Federer appeared to be cruising to another easy victory when he took the first set but Gonzalez toughed things out in the second.

There was not a single break point and so a tie-break ensued and Gonzalez took it, losing just a single point.

Both players had chances to break in the decider but after missing five opportunities of his own, it was the Swiss who cracked first, losing his serve in the 11th game as Gonzalez got his famed forehand working to its full effect.

The high-quality match was soon over, Federer sending a forehand wide on the second match point as Gonzalez earned a famous win.

Earlier in the day, Andy Roddick got his campaign under way with a hard-fought victory over Nikolay Davydenko.

The American star recorded a 6-3 4-6 6-2 win over Davydenko to give himself the ideal start in the Red Group.

Roddick, who hit nine aces en route to victory, had appeared to be on course for a straight-sets victory but slipped up at the end of the second set, losing his serve twice.

Roddick led by a set and a break at 4-3 in the second but from that position lost three games in a row, including two on his own serve, as Davydenko levelled the match.

That prompted Roddick to smash his racquet into the court. However, Roddick soon regained his composure.

The Russian soon fell behind in the deciding set and could not fight back a second time.

Roddick lost just two points on his famed serve in the final set as he took an early step towards the semi-finals.

However, Federer's defeat means the group remains wide open going into the second round of matches on Wednesday.
