Tennis:  Roger Federer put his third round scare at the Australian Open behind him, cruising past 13th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-4 7-6 (9/7) 6-3 to book his place in the quarter finals in Melbourne on Monday.

Federer, who needed four and a half hours to see off Janko Tipsarevic on Saturday, looked much more at ease against the Czech, although he did have a few anxious moments in the second set before wrapping up the win just under two hours.

The Swiss master now plays James Blake in the quarter finals after the American had earlier beaten Marin Cilic in straight sets.

Blake looked dominant throughout his encounter, never dropping a service game against the unseeded Croatian and it took just one hour 40 minutes to claim victory.

In the women's draw Venus Williams progressed to the quarter-finals, overcoming an uncertain start to defeat qualifier Marta Domachowska 6-4 6-4 on the Rod Laver Arena.

The former world number one, who played with a heavily strapped thigh, progressed despite being less than convincing in the early exchanges and will now take on Ana Ivanovic in the last eight.

The Serbian, seeded four, looked like she would breeze past Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki after dropping just one game in the first set but in the end had to battle her way to a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory.
