GENDER DIVIDE:FEMALES CONTINUE to outperform males in key Leaving Certificate subjects in the honours and ordinary papers.
In the honours subjects, 17,801 females took the English paper, with 14,111 (79.2 per cent) getting honours; 3,531 (19.8 per cent) passing and 159 (0.9 per cent) failing.
Of the 13,991 males, 10,362 (74.1 per cent) got honours; 3,398 (24.3 per cent) passed; 231 (1.6 per cent) failed.
A total of 9,182 females sat Irish, with 7,659 (83.5 per cent) achieving honours; 1,412 (15.4 per cent) passing and 111 (1.2 per cent failing.
Of the 4,812 males, 3,821 (79.3 per cent) got honours; 948 (19.7 per cent) passed and 43 (0.9 per cent) failed.
In mathematics, 3,880 females took the honours paper, with 3,113 (80.1 per cent) successful, 622 (16 per cent) passing; 145 (3.8 per cent) failing.
Of the 4,630 males, 3,511 (75.7 per cent) were successful, 882 (19.1 per cent) passed and 237 (5.1 per cent) failed.
A total of 8,808 females took honours French, with 6,588 (74.9 per cent) successful, 1,958 (22.3 per cent) passing and and 262 (3 per cent) failing.
Of the 5,418 males, 3,856 (71.1 per cent) were successful; 1,385 (25.6 per cent) passed and 177 (3.2 per cent) failed. In history, 2,818 (79.8 per cent) of the 3,534 females got honours; 601 (17 per cent) passed and 115 (3.3 per cent) failed.
Of the 4,067 males, 3,051 (75 per cent) got honours; 854 (21 per cent) passed and 162 (4 per cent) failed.
A total of 8,238 females sat honours geography, with 6,362 (77.2 per cent) successful; 1,680 (20.3 per cent) passing and 196 (2.4 per cent) failing.
Of the 10,031 males, 7,207 (72 per cent) got honours, 2,481 (24.7 per cent) passed and 343 (3.4 per cent) failed.
In biology, 12,290 females took the honours paper, with 8,864 (72.2 per cent) successful, 2,455 (20 per cent) passing and 971 (7.9 per cent) failing. Of the 6,033 males, 4,243 (70.3 per cent) got honours, 1,307 (21.7 per cent) passed and 483 (8 per cent) failed.
A total of 12,489 females took the Irish ordinary paper, with 10,128 (81.2 per cent) getting honours, 1949 (15.6 per cent) passing and 412 (3.2 per cent) failing.
A total of 13,331 males sat the exam, with 9,187 (88.9 per cent) getting honours, 3,120 (23.4 per cent) passing and 1,024 (7.6 per cent) failing.
Of the 35,803 females who took mathematics, 24,088 (67.4 per cent) got honours, 7,334 (20.5 per cent) passed and 4,381 (12.3 per cent) failed.
Among the 17,094 males, 10,950 (64.1 per cent) got honours, 3,696 (21.6 per cent) passed and 2,448 (14.4 per cent) failed.
A total of 7,356 females sat French at ordinary level, with 4,661 (63. 4 per cent) achieving honours, 2,178 (29.6 per cent) passing and 517 (7 per cent) failing.
