Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson hinted Wayne Rooney’s season may be over after he saw his side go top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win against in-form Tottenham.
The England striker watched on from the stands due to a groin injury which Ferguson said could keep him out for the rest of the campaign.
“I think he’ll probably take two to three weeks to recover,” Ferguson said. “We’ll try to get him back, he’ll obviously be desperate to get back himself. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Ferguson pin-pointed his side’s ability to hold their nerve under pressure as key to a win that moved them two points clear of Chelsea.
United looked in danger of being held after Ledley King’s header had cancelled out Giggs’ first penalty.
But a clever finish from Nani with 10 minutes left moved them ahead before the Portuguese won a late penalty which Giggs converted.
“We played well, that was important, but most important was we kept our nerve,” Ferguson added.
“We had no signs of nerves, which is great at this time of season — that’s a great quality to have.”
