Soccer:Alex Ferguson has played down fears about fitness of Wayne Rooney, who was named Barclays player of the season today to complete a clean sweep of gongs in England.
The Manchester United striker limped out of the action 13 minutes from the end of the 4-0 win over Stoke on Sunday, sparking immediate fears about his health ahead of England boss Fabio Capello naming his provisional World Cup tomorrow.
But, in confirming Rooney had aggravated a groin injury that first surfaced at Blackburn last month, Ferguson stressed he was not too concerned about the 24-year old.
"He has aggravated his groin again," said Ferguson. "I don't think it is serious. I think he will be okay for England."
Rooney adds today’s award to the Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ prizes he picked up last month.
Rooney scored 26 goals in just 32 Premier League appearances, easily surpassing his previous best tally of 16, to help sustain United’s title challenge until the final day of the season.
