Fianna Fáil has seen its support climb 5 per cent in the immediate aftermath of the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern's announcement that he is to leave office on May 6th.
The Red C poll published in this morning's
Sunday Business Postputs Fianna Fáil's support at 40 per cent.
Mr Ahern announced on Wednesday he would quit on May 6th amid concerns about his personal finances.
According to the poll, Fine Gael has seen its support fall two points to 28 per cent while the Labour Party remains unchanged at 11 per cent.
The Green Party has climbed a further point to 9 per cent, Sinn Féin has dropped three percentage points to 6 per cent, and the PDs remains static at 1 per cent.
When asked whether Mr Ahern was right to resign, only 22 per cent of voters said no, according to the poll which was carried out on Thursday
Brian Cowen who is set to become Taoiseach next Wednesday has the support of 63 per cent of those polled while Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has the backing of just 24 per cent.
