Fianna Fáil headquarters is expected to insist that only three candidates are selected to run in the Galway West constituency, in spite of a weekend row over the issue.
A convention broke up in disarray on Sunday when delegates complained they had not been informed in advance of the number of candidates that could be selected. Party headquarters had decided that three candidates should be chosen.
Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív said he and his three party colleagues - Minister of State Frank Fahey, Cllr Mary Hoade and Cllr Séamus Walsh - had already left the room to allow for voting when the row erupted. "Small things can cause big trouble, and unfortunately there was no roving mike, so people could not make their voices heard," Mr Ó Cuív said.
He would not be drawn on how many candidates he believed should run in the constituency, but noted that "the only time we got three seats was when we ran five candidates". Party headquarters "are aware of my analysis of the situation," he said.
A party spokeswoman said a report on events in Galway West, expected to be completed within days, would be sent to the party's national executive's constituency selection committee.
