Three Fianna Fail TDs yesterday handed in a letter to the Nigerian Embassy in Dublin expressing concern at the "serious plight" of the imprisoned Ogoni 19.
The letter protests at the "terrible conditions" in which the prisoners are detained and calls for their immediate release or a fair trial.
"Further, we request that they be given full rights of defence without impositions of the death penalty."
Mr Tom Kitt, Mr David Andrews and Mr Eoin Ryan appealed for permission for a small representative group from Ireland to visit the prisoners "to ensure that they are given full access to lawyers, medical care and family visits."
