The general election will be about "bridging the gap" between Ireland's strong economy and its "failing public services", Fine Gael said today.

Outlining details of his party's agenda for its ardfheis this weekend, deputy party leader Richard Bruton and health spokesman Dr Liam Twomey said the event would focus on delivering improved public services for those that need them most.

They added it would also set out an agenda for health reform and focus on protecting the progress made by the economy over the past 15 years and on avoiding another five years of "wasteful spending, broken promises and missed opportunities".

Dr Twomey said: "We have waited too long for this Government to deliver on their promises in the health area. Now is the time for a new Government with new ideas on how to solve the problems of our health services.

"With targeted measures on children's health, preventative health and how our hospitals operate, I believe Fine Gael has a reform agenda on health that will make a real difference to the public."

The event will take place at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin. Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny will address delegates on Saturday night in a live televised speech.
