Fine Gael Cllr John O'Shea was yesterday named as the next mayor of Co Cork. Fine Gael councillors, who hold the balance of power on the council, voted him in as mayor ahead of Cllrs Derry Canty and Gerry Kelly.
Mr O'Shea represents the Bantry area and was first elected to council seven years ago. He will take over from Michael Creed in June.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that the Fine Gael general election selection convention for Cork South Central will take place on April 19th at the Rochestown Park Hotel in the city. Three candidates have put their names forward. They are Lord Mayor of Cork Deirdre Clune, Simon Coveney MEP and Cllr Jerry Buttimer.
