A debate on drink-driving legislation, planned for last night’s Fine Gael’s parliamentary party meeting, has been deferred after the meeting was dominated by budget discussions.

Waterford TD John Deasy was to call on the party to oppose the Road Traffic Bill. The publication of the Bill last week was welcomed by the party’s transport spokesman Fergus O’Dowd and road safety spokesman Shane McEntee.

Party leader Enda Kenny is understood to have referred to their comments last night. “He said that’s what we have spokespersons for,” said one parliamentary party member who did not wish to be named.
