Fine Gael looks set to name a 23-year-old accountant as its third candidate in the Longford-Westmeath constituency.

Peter Burke, who is understood to have finished third in the recent selection convention, is expected to be named soon as the general election running mate of Senator James Bannon and Cllr Nicky McFadden.

National party officers have taken extensive soundings from the constituency and despite speculation of a "trophy" candidate being parachuted in informed sources now say Mr Burke will get the nod.

The vacancy arises from the decision of Deputy Paul McGrath not to seek re-election. Fianna Fáil has already selected Deputy Donie Cassidy, Deputy Peter Kelly and Senator Mary O'Rourke, while Deputy Willie Penrose (Labour) is tipped to top the poll.
