AS nominations for the Seanad by election, caused by the death of the Cathaoirleach, Mr Sean Fallon, close today, it has emerged that Fianna Fail will support Mr Paddy O'Hanlon, a founding member of the SDLP and former civil rights activist.
He will be fighting for the seat against Mr Sam McAughtry who has Government endorsement. Mr O'Hanlon's decision to seek a seat on the Industrial and Commercial Panel in the Upper House has led the former Fianna Fail TD, Mr Terry Leyden, to withdraw from the contest.
Mr Leyden's nomination paper had already been lodged but last night he offered full support for Mr O'Hanlon.
Ms Deirdre Lane, Clerk of the Seanad, confirmed yesterday that a number of extra nominations were expected by today's midday deadline. Ballot papers will be posted to the electorate which consists of Oireachtas members only and the votes will be counted on February 23rd.
Intensive canvassing of Independent TDs, the Progressive Democrats as well as independent Senators is now expected to be undertaken by the Government and Fianna Fail. The Government operates with a minority in the Seanad but enjoys a six strong majority in the Dail.
The Fianna Fail leader Mr Bertie Ahern, said last night that his party was delighted to endorse Mr O'Hanlon, a first cousin of the former Minister for Health Dr Rory O'HanIon. He had distinguished himself in politics, in his service to the public and in his legal career.
