Figures show drop in car licencing in November

There were 4,498 new private cars licensed in November, 2002 compared with 4,816 in November, 2001, a decrease of 6.6 per cent, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office this morning.

In January to November 2002, there were 147,731 new private cars licensed, a decrease of 6.8 per cent on the corresponding period last year.

First licensing of second-hand private cars increased by 324 (37.7 per cent) on the same month last year and decreased by 2,086 (-14.6 per cent) in the year to date.

New goods vehicles licensed increased by 90 (5.1 per cent) in November, 2002 when compared with November, 2001, and decreased by 2,481 (-8.4 per cent) in the period January to November, 2002 by comparison with the same period last year.

The vehicle licensing figures also show that:

  • In the period January-November 2002, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 214,037 compared with 230,982 in the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3 per cent.
  • The highest number of new private cars licensed in November classified by make are Ford (566) followed by Volkswagen (441), Opel(424), Toyota (388), Fiat (367) and Nissan (361).
  • The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and are classified by taxation class.
