A Fiji magistrate today ordered thatcoup plotter Mr George Speight and 12 others stand trial in the HighCourt for treason over their seizure of parliament last year.

Magistrate Sailesi Temo, who was conducting a preliminaryinquiry into the case, set an initial appearance in the High Courton August 31st- coinciding with a general election in Fiji.

The High Court earlier gave the go-ahead for thegeneral election in the last week of August to restore democracy tothe Pacific nation, 15 months after turmoil caused by the raciallymotivated coup.

Nationalist rebels led by failed businessman Mr Speight seizedparliament on May 19th last year and took ethnic-Indian Prime MinisterMahendra Chaudhry and his government hostage for 56 days.
