A FILE is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and Garda investigations are continuing into a house fire which has claimed the life of a 27-year-old man in Co Mayo.

Joseph Sweeney, McDermott Street, Ballina, died in St James's Hospital, Dublin, on Saturday. He was being treated there for serious burns sustained the previous Sunday.

A postmortem on the dead man was being carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis yesterday prior to the remains being released to the family for burial.

Mr Sweeney, an unemployed man, and his parents, John and Rita, were in the family home on Sunday when the fire started at about 4.30pm.

Both parents received minor injuries and were treated at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar. Mr Sweeney was also taken to Mayo General Hospital but was later transferred to St James's Hospital as his injuries were life threatening.

Gardaí confirmed at an early stage that the outbreak was "suspicious".

On Wednesday last, a man was arrested for questioning in connection with the blaze.

He was released without charge on Friday.

Gardaí say a file on the case is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ballina based Det Sgt John McCormack said yesterday that any members of the public with information which might be of importance to the investigation should contact their special incident room at 096-21422.

Meanwhile, gardaí were yesterday carrying out a technical examination of a burned out mobile home in which an Englishman died in south Kerry in the early hours of yesterday morning. Early indications were that the fire was not suspicious.

Supt Michael O'Donovan said the dead man was in his 30s and had been identified as from England and living and working locally for about a year. His name was not being released until family members in England were contacted.

The fire in the mobile home, which was parked in a quarry at Derra, around 8km (five miles) west of Sneem, was spotted by a local at around 4.30am and reported to the gardaí and emergency services.
